Why sustainable transport? Why sustainable transport?

Globally we use the car more than any other form of transport. Over-reliance on cars is having catastrophic impacts on our health and the environment.

  • 1 million people worldwide die each year in road fatalities and up to 10 million are injured.1
  • Cars contribute 15% of global carbon emissions every year, over twice as many as the airline industry.2
  • Every 2.3 seconds a new car is sold in China, equivalent to 13.7 million new cars per year.3
  • 70% of permanent residents of the Sunshine Coast use a car to drive to work

Sustainable transport such as cycling, walking, public transport, scooters and car pooling causes far less emissions and consumes far less resources getting you from A to B.

Sustainable transport is also more cost effective, and in the case of walking and cycling, beneficial for your health and social life.

The Sunshine Coast region covers a large area and for most people it is impossible to ditch the car permanently. TravelSmart Sunshine Coast encourages you to replace one car journey a week with a sustainable transport option or park the car 1-2km away from your destination and walk or cycle the remaining distance.

We need to alter the way we think about cars.

Driving is a privilege, not a right.

A journey taken out of the car is a journey towards a better future.

Together we can make a difference.

Get involved and be TravelSmart.
