Ride Smart - Ride Legal - Ride Safe!
There are a number of things to consider when riding your bike on the pathways and roads. TravelSmart Sunshine Coast encourages you to read through the information on this page and the links in the left menu before you venture out for your next ride.

Helmets
- All cyclists must wear a helmet approved by Standards Australia. Your helmet should be properly fitted and positioned correctly on your head. The helmet should not be able to move in any direction (you may need to alter your hairstyle). Be sure it cannot move forward to obstruct your vision, or back to expose your forehead.
- Bicycle helmets save lives so don't be insane, protect your brain! On a more serious note, bicycle helmets protect against head injuries - the greatest single cause of death and injury among cyclists.
- Choose a helmet which is going to be comfortable to wear. You will want it to be well ventilated and not too heavy.
- Check your helmet regularly and be sure to replace it if there are any cracks.
- Caught without a helmet = $75 fine!
Lights and Reflectors
- When riding at night your bike must show a white front light and a rear red light and a red reflector. You can be fined $30 on the spot if you don't have lights.
- You are required to have a flashing or steady white light that can be seen for at least 200m. Add reflective stickers, material and tape to your clothing, shoes, bike and equipment bags.
Clothing
- Wear bright coloured clothing, particularly when riding at night. Grey and dark colours make it difficult for motorists to see you. There is a great range of cycling apparel on the market
