New to Cycling New to Cycling

You're never too young or old to start cycling!  If you are new to cycling it can be overwhelming when it comes to what type of bike to ride, where to ride and knowing all the tips and tricks to make your riding more enjoyable and safe.

The Cycling Promotion Fund has great information on How to Get Started.

The Sunshine Coast is a cyclist's paradise with an extensive pathway and on road cycling network. It has flat terrain along much of its coastal area with light traffic as well as challenging rides in the hinterland.  There are bunch rides every day of the week for roads cyclists to enjoy.

Starting out

  • Choose a route which is flat and smooth, a shared off road path is a great way to start.
  • Ride slowly for the first 10 minutes, gradually increasing your speed as you progress in your ride.
  • As a beginner, cycle for 20 minutes and aim to cover about 5km. Slowly increase your distance and speed over time.
  • Choose a correct fitting bike that suits your riding needs.
  • Wear comfortable clothing e.g. Shorts, trainers and t-shirt, not jeans and hiking boots!
  • Drink plenty of water and plan your ride.

Whether you are new to cycling or starting after an absence, there are many benefits to trading your four wheels for two. Get out and explore your Sunshine Coast and stay safe.
