What is TravelSmart Sunshine Coast? What is TravelSmart Sunshine Coast?

TravelSmart is an Australia-wide program focusing on travel behaviour change.  TravelSmart Sunshine Coast is an initiative of the Sunshine Coast Council that promotes the benefits of sustainable transport such as walking, cycling, scooters, public transport, and carpooling and encourages residents and visitors to consider sustainable transport as a viable alternative to solo car journeys.

Individuals need only change a few of their weekly solo car journeys to sustainable forms of transport to have a significant positive impact on their health, traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

The TravelSmart Sunshine Coast program has the following aims:

  • To reduce the amount of travel undertaken in cars and to increase the number of people cycling, walking, using public transport and scooters, and carpooling.
  • To protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • To reduce the need for additional road space.
  • To encourage local communities to adopt healthier, more active travel behaviour.

Sustainable transport has a range of benefits including:

  • Reduced traffic congestion and parking problems.
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions, air and noise pollution.
  • Reduced stress and increased health and fitness for individuals through walking and cycling.
  • Potential cost savings for individuals and workplaces.
  • More people walking and cycling creates a sense of community as it provides greater opportunities for social interaction.
